On Tuesday, AI startup Perplexity made a $34.5 billion bid to buy Google Chrome, completely altering the path of the browser wars, and internet browsing as the DoJ pushes Alphabet to curb monopoly power.
If accepted, the deal would put, and allow Perplexity to change parts of internet browser – promising open-source Chrome code and AI search – in front of 3 billion users, rivaling OpenAI’s dominance in the AI space. The Justice Department (DoJ) has pressured Google’s parent company to divest Chrome after antitrust rulings.
Is Perplexity AI Better Than Google?
As users explore AI alternative to Google Chrome browser, Perplexity’s opportunity surfaces during the fast browser evolution. The startup already offers users its Perplexity AI browser, Comet, for basic web tasks.
Perplexity Comet browser carries out simple web operations with AI.
Acquiring Chrome would give Perplexity access to over three billion users, putting it in direct competition companies developing AI browser alternatives to Google, such as OpenAI.
Typically, consumers favor AI alternatives as trust in traditional platforms wanes over privacy and monopoly accusations.
Though Google’s parent company, Alphabet, hasn’t offered to sell, US regulators are pushing for action after a court ruled its monopoly unfair. The DoJ suggests divesting the Chrome browser search engine could resolve this.
Perplexity, under CEO Aravind Srinivas, asserts it would leave Chrome’s code open-source and leave the default search engine unchanged. That might be sufficient to reassure users who still prefer a search engine that doesn’t use AI or are concerned about sudden changes.
How Does Perplexity Handle Privacy Compared to Google?
Privacy is a growing concern among internet users, and many are questioning if there’s a better browser than Chrome when it comes to handling personal data. Perplexity claims its tools, including Perplexity AI’s minimalistic AI-powered search engine, offer a lighter, more focused experience without collecting excessive data.
With this offer, browser wars are heating up once again everywhere. A couple of investors have already pledged to entirely finance the bid if Alphabet comes on board. Meanwhile, Perplexity’s fast moves in attempting to acquire TikTok several months ago, are a sign that it’s not simply looking to become another search utility.
As many users pose the question: Can Perplexity replace Google?, the company is positioning itself as a leading player in a new wave of browser technology. Whether or not it will actually tip the balance in browser warfare is unknown, but the world of technology is most definitely watching closely.
In the end, neither company has yet to comment on the bid. Meanwhile, Alphabet stock rose 1.4% after the news, and SoftBank, an investor in Perplexity, rose 6.9% by midday trading signaling that the next chapter in the browser wars may be just beginning.
As the tech industry props for what could be a major shake-up, all eyes are on Alphabet’s response. Whether this bold offer succeeds or not, Perplexity’s move has reignited the browser wars, pushing the conversation forward about innovation, privacy, and what the future of internet browsing might look like.
