Ethics and Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence

In the development and design phase of Artificial Intelligence software, the developer runs the risk of erroneously inserting data that may cause bias in the system. With the countless lines of code in each application, it can be challenging to know what values are being programmed in software and how algorithms reach decisions. What measures are being taken to ensure AI systems do not have the same flaws as the people creating them? How can we collectively reduce bias and foster equality, fairness and transparency in AI?

Dubai has created their own revolutionary AI Ethics Self-Assessment Toolkit that provides a framework to ensure ethical and practical guidelines are offered to protect against potential flaws in the system. It supports industry sectors, academia and provides individuals with a greater understanding of how AI systems can be used responsibly. The framework consists of core principles and guidelines and a tool for developers to assess their platform.

The program establishes clear ethical requirements for AI development and design. This paradigmatic guidance tool sets a precedent and a universal standard for other global communities to potentially utilize. Such ethical considerations are fundamental to AI systems that make or inform significant decisions – those which impact an individual or society. When important decision-making is influenced by an AI system, it becomes imperative to step-up methods and practices in support of human rights and equality.

The human condition is imperfect, and as such, artificial intelligence learns from our (limiting) personal filters and perception of the world. An ethical approach helps maintain a level of equality, fairness and transparency in the development of AI technologies. The AI Ethics Self-Assessment Toolkit will improve programming prospects and create a balanced, consistent measurement and framework for individuals creating AI systems.

When an AI is focused on a very specific task, ethical values become a greater concern. The growing sophistication of AI software necessitates a more defined form of policy/framework for ethical considerations, to ensure commitment to the preservation of human rights. This too highlights the importance of increasing data openness for developers so that they are able to obtain more scope of data for training purposes.
