Google has unveiled the development of its latest AI tool, ‘Genesis,’ designed to act as a personal assistant to journalists to generate news copy after being supplied with necessary details, according to The New York Times.

The news came amidst rising concerns about AI-generated misinformation. AI systems like Google’s Bard have been proven to be less effective in fact-checking content before its online publication.

The Alphabet-owned company revealed that it has already pitched the tool to globally renowned news outlets, such as The Washington Post and The New York Times. While Genesis is indeed designed to work as an intelligent assistant to journalists, there are concerns that it could potentially be adopted as a long-term replacement for human journalists.

In the past, legal issues arose from the use of generative AI tools to generate content, where said systems and tools provided inaccurate summaries of fabricated information. This led to numerous defamation suits questioning the AI models’ ability to deliver factually checked news content.

While Google will most likely address threats that could jeopardize journalistic integrity and attempt to resolve them before the official launch of Genesis, the fact remains that factual errors could be problematic for AI systems strictly designed for journalism. AI systems and chatbots like Google Bard have shown limitations in fact-checking compared to human journalists, often leading to the dissemination of inaccurate information with unwarranted confidence and authority.

Despite the countless advantages of using AI for news writing, concerns arise about AI’s ability to uphold and protect journalistic standards of objectivity. AI algorithms are designed based on data and can inherit biases present in the data they are trained on. This could potentially lead to AI-generated news inadvertently reflecting or perpetuating biases in reporting.
