Meta announced the launch of AudioCraft, a suite of open-source AI tools that create music and sound effects using simple text prompts, making it possibly the best AI music generator out there.

In a blog post, Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday the release of Audiocraft, a suite of open-source AI tools that create music and sound effects using simple text prompts, making it possibly the best AI music generator out there.  

The tool consists of three core components: AudioGen, MusicGen, and EnCodec.

AudioGen enables the generation of various audio effects and soundscapes, including dog barks, car horns, and footsteps on different surfaces. MusicGen is tailored specifically for music composition and can create songs of various genres based on descriptions. EnCodec, a neural network-based audio compression codec, has recently been enhanced to produce higher quality music with fewer artifacts.

Despite the popularity of generative AI models for text and images, development in generative audio tools has been relatively slow. However, Meta’s release of what could possibly become the best AI music generator under the MIT License aims to change this landscape and contribute to the broader community by providing accessible tools for audio and musical experimentation.

“The models are available for research purposes and to further people’s understanding of the technology. We’re excited to give researchers and practitioners access so they can train their own models with their own datasets for the first time and help advance the state of the art,” Meta said. To encourage diversity in the data used for training, Meta has open-sourced the code for AudioCraft, enabling other researchers to test new approaches and address potential biases in generative models.

While some critics argue that the current quality of AudioCraft audio samples may not match professionally produced commercial audio, Meta believes that the simple approach they have developed could potentially revolutionize the music industry, much like how synthesizers changed music once they became popular.
