Tech Giants to Study the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Jobs

Artificial Intelligence jobs, ai, artificial intelligence

Tech giants have joined the AI-Enabled Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Workforce Consortium, aiming to address the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on jobs.

  • Cisco is leading the consortium with support from Accenture, Eightfold, Google, IBM, Indeed, Intel, Microsoft, and SAP, along with advisory roles from AFL-CIO and CWA
  • The group will evaluate AI’s impact on 56 specific ICT job roles, offering practical insights and recommendations for employers and workers.

Leading tech companies have come together, forming the AI-Enabled Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Workforce Consortium.

Recent developments, including reports of significant job losses, are indicating the potential impact of AI on jobs.

Cisco is leading the consortium with the support of Accenture, Eightfold, Google, IBM, Indeed, Intel, Microsoft, and SAP. The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) are also part of the project in advisory roles. These companies aim to explore how AI will reshape technology jobs and to identify strategies for upskilling and reskilling workers. And the tech giant seems confident about the outcome of their joint effort.

Lisa Gevelber, Founder of Grow with Google, shared in the announcement, “We’re committed to collaborating across sectors to ensure workers of all backgrounds can use AI effectively and develop the skills needed to prepare for future-focused jobs, qualify for new opportunities, and thrive in the economy.”

The group will be evaluating AI’s impact on specific job roles within the ICT industry. It will then provide recommendations for training programs and facilitate connections between businesses and skilled workers.

They will focus on 56 ICT jobs that encompass a significant portion of the industry workforce. Through that, the consortium will be able to offer practical insights and recommendations for employers and workers alike.

Accenture’s Chief Leadership and Human Resources Officer stated, “This consortium brings together an impressive ecosystem of industry partners committed to growing leading-edge technology, data and AI skills within our communities. Reskilling people to work with AI is paramount in every industry. Organizations that invest as much in learning as they do in the technology not only create career pathways, they are well positioned to lead in the market.”

However, skepticism remains. How effective will these efforts be in addressing the broader concerns about AI-induced job displacement? These companies are pledging to train millions of individuals in AI-related skills, but people will still lose their jobs. And it’s not like AI roles in the future job market are going to be unlimited.

For what they’re worth, these efforts are commendable, but they are essentially just promises and reports. Not concrete actions which are needed if people have any chance to make it out economically alive.
