DeepSeek Deeply Could Dethrone OpenAI
On Tuesday, DeepSeek company saw its new large language model rivaling OpenAI’s ChatGPT performance while using significantly fewer Nvidia chips in its development, with the DeepSeek model shocking Silicon Valley and taking Nvidia’s stock on a whirlwind, plummeting 17%, erasing $600 billion in market value in just one day.
Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen called DeepSeek’s achievement the “AI Sputnik moment,” likening it to the Soviet Union’s satellite launch that ignited the space race. Andreessen’s response, however, is not a Hail Mary, but more like worrisome reflection over the US potentially losing its AI dominance.
DeepSeek Models – Century’s Biggest Debate
The DeepSeek company claims to have developed its models for under $6 million. Bernstein Analysts doubted the efficiency feasibility without leveraging OpenAI’s existing advancements. And stated that “It seems categorically false that ‘China duplicated OpenAI for $5M’ and we don’t think it really bears further discussion.”
Amid skepticism, the new open-source AI model from China provoked debates over the high price tag for AI development in the US. According to an estimate done by the Swiss multinational investment bank and financial services company, UBS Group, tech companies in the US invested about $224 billion in AI last year alone, projecting it would hit $280 billion by 2025. Last week, OpenAI and SoftBank announced a new $500 billion plan to support AI infrastructure.
“Advancements in training and inference efficiency enable further scaling and proliferation of AI. This benefits the entire ecosystem in the long term,” said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
Another TikTok Moment?
DeepSeek reasoning model sparked comparisons to TikTok, where another Chinese tech phenomenon disrupted US markets, questioning whether DeepSeek will challenge OpenAI’s market dominance, and could companies such as Apple, Samsung, and Amazon who’ve banned ChatGPT turn to DeepSeek for their AI needs?
Beijing is resisting Washington’s push for AI dominance, improving on the idea with user-friendly features and added specs. DeepSeek’s application, available on Apple and Google stores, has already topped iPhone download charts.
Turning Point – AI Race
With DeepSeek chat model continuing to make headlines this week, its high demand could force US tech giants to work harder with their innovations and reduce development costs. Data security and geopolitical tension do, however, remain a concern. “DeepSeek’s rise highlights that China hasn’t been idle,” said Mitul Kotecha, Barclays’ head of emerging markets strategy.
While some analysts state the development as a wakeup call for US companies to review their AI strategy, others fear it might signal deeper weaknesses in the US tech sector.
As the competition escalates, one big question begs for an answer, “Will US companies be able to hold onto their lead or will the DeepSeek r1 model interruption be an opening in restructuring of power in the AI world?”
Whether the rise of DeepSeek company matches that of TikTok or gets held back by markets suspicious of overseas tech influence, the next couple of months will give answers to the users. The race has entered a “whole new world, a new fantastic point of view.”
