Isar Aerospace Puts Europe’s Commercial Space Ambitions into Orbit 

Isar Aerospace sent satellites into low Earth orbit, using its Spectrum rocket marking a major step for commercial European spaceflight.

On September 5, Isar Aerospace, German company sent satellites into low Earth orbit from Andøya Spaceport in Norway, using its Spectrum rocket on a second flight that marked a major step for commercial European spaceflight and sovereign access capability. 

The result gives Europe a privately developed route to orbit as launch capacity becomes strategically important. The Isar aerospace spectrum program is moving beyond testing toward repeatable service for satellite operators. 

Europe Reaches Orbit from Norway 

Mission “Onward and Upward” lifted off at 10:12 pm CEST and completed stages needed for orbit. For the European space industry, the sequence included MaxQ, main engine cutoff, stage separation, second-stage ignition, fairing release, circularization, and spacecraft deployment. 

“Today, Isar Aerospace opened space from Continental Europe. Launch continues to be the largest bottleneck for the global space industry and from today on, there is a true alternative for commercial and institutional customers,” Metzler said, calling the flight a turning point for European spaceflight. 

The European space mission showed how quickly the company has advanced since Spectrum’s first test flight in March 2025, which lasted 30 seconds before the rocket fell into the sea. The second flight reached orbit and deployed payloads. 

Spectrum is a 28-meter, two-stage launcher for small and medium satellite missions. The spectrum Isar aerospace vehicle uses ten engines and is designed to carry up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit. 

The flight carried CubeSats and a technology experiment selected through DLR’s Microlauncher Competition. The European space agency rocket launch support came through ESA Boost! program, which backs commercial European space transportation services. 

“We achieved within a few years what had taken the European space industry decades before. Europe now has sovereign access to space,” Metzler said in the company’s statement. “We have entered into a new chapter for European spaceflight.” 

From One Launch to Industrial Scale 

The Isar aerospace spectrum launch is part of a larger plan. Spectrum vehicles three through seven are in production, while a new 40,000-square-meter manufacturing site near Munich is being prepared to increase output. 

That production push matters for the space industry in Europe, which has limited launch options and pressure to secure independent access to orbit for communications, Earth observation, research and national security missions. Isar Aerospace says its model depends on vertical integration, with development, manufacturing and testing handled internally.  

The spectrum Isar aerospace strategy is designed to reduce dependence on suppliers and support faster production as launch demand grows. The company is also developing a second launch complex in Nova Scotia, Canada.  

For another European space mission, the site could provide access to mid and high inclination orbits used by Earth observation and communications satellites. 

The next challenge is consistency. One orbital success gives European spaceflight a new commercial option, but Isar Aerospace needs to prove Spectrum can launch reliably, scale production and serve customers on schedule. 

If it succeeds, European spaceflight will gain more than another rocket. Europe would have a private launch system designed around frequent missions, automated production and launch sites, strengthening its ability to place satellites in orbit without relying heavily on outside providers.
