On May 20, London-based Google DeepMind workers voted to begin formal union mediation to block the use of their frontier AI models listed in a Google military partnership with American and Israeli defense and intelligence sectors.
Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) is a shift inside the DeepMind AI division, with employees fearing their code is weaponized through various Google military contracts with the Pentagon and Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Employees are now organizing labor to regain control over how their creations are used.
Google Staff Pushback Against Defense Contracts
Project Nimbus Israel collaboration – with Amazon in on it also – is a huge factor, which supplies advanced AI and cloud capabilities to government agencies. DeepMind employees are worried about how this Google military infrastructure is applied in active warfare.

Will There Be Another Google Israel Deal?
To prevent another Google Israel project Nimbus expansion, workers are coordinating under the Communications Workers Union (CWU) and Unite.
Staff are calling for a complete reassessment of the Google Israel deal parameters, the restoration of the argued anti-weapons stance, the creation of an independent ethics oversight body, and the legal right for individual engineers to refuse to work on military projects on moral grounds.
“This is a really important moment where tech workers at Google’s frontier AI lab are connecting with some of the most oppressed people in communities around the world,” said John Chadfield, CWU national officer for tech workers.
Meanwhile, Google management declined to voluntarily recognize the unions but has agreed to standard next steps by entering formal talks through Acas. In a staff email regarding this Google military dispute, management noted that these talks “may lead to a formal ballot in a few months’ time, giving all eligible employees the opportunity to vote on whether they want to be represented by the unions.”
According to the Company leadership, the internal culture remains rooted in open communication, even as workers challenge the broader Google Israel project Nimbus framework. While management views the Acas meetings as a standard bureaucratic procedure, union organizers see it as a hard-won victory for tech accountability regarding the Google military ecosystem.
“There’s clearly a groundswell of opinion about the contracts they are expected to serve, for example the relationship with drone technology and the Israeli government and the relationship with the US military,” A CWU source stated.
