Kamala Harris, Might Shape the Future Regulations for Big Tech 

New Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris on AI could be bearer of new AI regulations in the tech world, if she wins.  

Following the withdrawal of the US President Joe Biden from the 2024 presidential race, his Vice President, Kamala Harris was nominated by the President himself to become the Democratic Party’s new nominee for the elections. President Biden has given Harris his full support, with her in parallel expressing her will to earn and win this nomination. 

It is still unclear if other Democratic candidates will compete against her for the nomination at an open convention or choose another way in the process. 

A Tech-Centric Approach 

Speaking of the technological aspects of Kamala Harris on AI nomination, she would bring a special tech centric perspective to the election process, due to her strong connection to the Bay Area and its tech sector.  

Before being elected to the Senate in 2016, Kamala Harris on AI held the position of San Franscisco’s attorney, and then as California’s attorney general. 

Harris’s relationship with the tech industry is notable. Early in her career, she was supported by very well-known venture capitalists, such as John Doerr, an American investor and venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins in Menlo Park and Ron Conway, a venture capitalist described as one of Silicon Valley’s “super angels.” Once Kamala announced to be a presidential candidate, she immediately gained the support of LinkedIn co-founder, Reid Hoffman. Meanwhile, other tech figures, including Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, have called for an open convention or remained cautious. 

A Tech Regulation Advocate 

Critics said that when Kamala Harris on AI was attorney general, she did not take the required actions to limit the power of tech giants when they were rapidly growing. Although being criticized, the democratic nominee has always been supporting and pushing towards increased regulation within the tech industry. Moreover, as a senator, she has constantly expressed the importance of tackling the issue of misinformation occurring on social media networks. 

During the 2020 presidential campaign, Harris emphasized the importance of regulation within the tech sector in a way that ensures consumer privacy without the need to breakdown some big tech giants, such as Amazon, Google, and Facebook. As for the main topic invading the world, Kamala Harris on AI, as a vice president, Harris has always stressed that it is possible to encourage innovation and make sure to protect people when using this technology, stating that she and President Biden “reject the false choice that suggests we can either protect the public or advance innovation.”
