AI Is Rewriting Your CEO's Messages and Most Companies Don't Know It

[London, UK] – 18th May 2026 – New independent research released today by Fresh, the award-winning intranet platform, warns of a growing crisis in corporate culture: The Employee Attention Recession. 

The Employee Attention Recession report draws on independent research with 1,000 professionals across the UK and United States, surveying the creators and recipients of internal communications to measure the gulf between what organisations believe they are communicating, and what employees are actually understanding.

The report reveals that 83% of employees now believe they receive too much internal information, with 35% stating they can no longer keep up with the volume. This surge of content has triggered a defensive “Attention Recession,” where employees have reportedly begun strictly rationing their mental bandwidth.

The Stakes: Trust vs. Distortion

The research highlights a high-stakes disconnect between how employees consume information and how leaders believe they are being heard:

  • 95% of employees trust AI to accurately capture key points, but 92% of Internal Communications (IC) professionals believe automated summaries distort the emotional register and intent.
  • Leadership believes its voice is getting through,but with 88% of employees using AI to summarise comms,algorithms often already rewrite the CEO’s message before it reaches the end user.
  • Only 12% of employees now read internal communications in full. Reading in full is now the least common response to receiving a communication.

“I’ve spent years at internal comms events, and as a vendor, people tell you the truth,” says David Bowman, Product Director at Fresh. “The truth is: most communicators already know which content is noise. Awareness is a problem but it’s also that ‘no’ is a high-stakes word when the person making the request is also the link between you, the information you need, and the employees who need it. This report should give practitioners the data to say it.”

AI As the New Gatekeeper

The research confirms that AI-generated summaries have officially overtaken traditional channels to become the number one discovery method for company news. 28% of employees now encounter company updates via AI first, ahead of the company intranet, leadership emails, or word-of-mouth.

Despite 98.6% of IC professionals being aware that their workforce is using AI to filter their messages, only 33% of organisations have formal monitoring or policies in place to govern how content is being reinterpreted.

“Subtraction is now a strategic necessity,” continues Bowman. “To be heard in 2026, organisations must design content to survive the summary. If you don’t cut the noise, the ‘Ghost in the Machine’ will do it for you and you won’t like the result.”
