Building on the success of its AI DJ function, Spotify is rolling out its latest beta feature, an AI playlist generator dubbed AI Playlists.
If you currently are a Spotify Premium subscriber on Android and iOS devices in the United Kingdom (U.K) and Australia, you can curate custom playlists using written prompts. AI Playlists can generate playlists tailored to a user’s specific mood or activity.
Traditional playlist creation methods are usually based solely on genres or time frame. However, Spotify’s AI-based playlist generator allows users to craft some of the wildest playlists. The themes could range from “songs to serenade my cat” to “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse.” The prompts can draw inspiration from various sources, including places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, or even emojis.
For the best outcome and user experience, Spotify recommends users incorporate a blend of genres, moods, artists, and decades to ensure a rich and diverse musical selection.
Once a playlist is generated, users can further refine their selections through commands such as “less upbeat” or “more pop. Users can also swipe left to remove specific songs, allowing for fine-tuning and customization.
AI Playlists relies on large language models (LLMs) to decipher user intent, coupled with Spotify’s personalization algorithms that draw from users’ listening histories.
Spotify employs third-party tools to enhance its AI and machine learning capabilities. However, the company ensures that the AI has safeguards in place to prevent offensive prompts or content related to current events or specific brands.
This AI playlist generator isn’t Spotify’s first dip in the AI waters. The company has had previous endeavors in AI-driven music experiences. Most notably is the global expansion of its AI DJ feature, which utilizes Sonantic and OpenAI technology to create personalized audio selections.
Despite its potential, AI Playlists does have limitations, notably its exclusion of non-music-related prompts and measures against offensive content. Nonetheless, early users have praised its efficiency and effectiveness in crafting unique playlists tailored to specific themes or moods.
It’s all nice and dandy. But does that mean Spotify will now hike up the prices for its Premium subscriptions? While current prices start at $5.99 per month for students and $10.99 for individuals, future updates may accompany changes in subscription models.
