UAE Launches ‘Big Data for Sustainable Development’ UN Platform
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Government launched its United Nations (UN) platform, “Big Data for Sustainable Development,” in an initiative directed at fulfilling the requirements for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The declaration came throughout the “Mobilizing Big Data Science for the Sustainable Development Goals” forum, which was kicked off on January 25th, of this year, at Dubai’s Expo 2020.
In collaboration with the UN, the UAE is one of four countries chosen as regional headquarters for the platform. Emirati ministers, government, and international officials also participated in the announcement’s event, and experts and analysts in data science and sustainable development.
Minister of State for International Cooperation and Chairperson of the National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals, Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy highlighted the UN’s judgment and trust in the UAE and chose it for the platform’s headquarter. It will signify a significant shift for The Emirate’s stature and improve its stance as a global hub for technology and big data in the region and potentially worldwide.
The minister further added that it would also magnify the UAE leadership’s eagerness to reach new heights in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). This will happen by utilizing big data and artificial intelligence (AI).
Minister of State for Advanced Technology and Chairwoman of the UAE Space Agency, Sarah bint Yousif Al Amiri revealed that the Emirates started implementing plans into the upcoming 50 years, driven by leadership’s approach towards welcoming a new wave of preemptive strategies – in support of its new vision to prioritize sciences and advanced technological development.
The UAE’s sustainable development goals also endorse extensive and sustainable manufacturing while fostering technological innovations. The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology will implement a plan to advocate innovation and advanced industrial tech solutions.
Currently, the UAE is seeking out an expansion in its collaboration with many countries prominent in the tech scene, as well as international organizations by drafting legislation and ascertaining tight associations to secure the alignment of tech laws of these countries, to coordinate efforts to secure data.
The UAE aims to create the right ecosystem to welcome talents in advanced data to accomplish its sustainability goals, all while focusing on enhancing the capabilities of its AI and the utilization of big data in most of its sectors.
