A Supreme Court judge in Brazil has initiated an investigation into Elon Musk and his American social media platform X for potential obstruction of justice.

  • Musk’s refusal to comply with a court order that demanded the removal of certain accounts on X ignited the conflict.
  • Misinformation has become a significant issue in Brazil, particularly during election periods, with candidates utilizing it as a campaign strategy.

A Supreme Court judge in Brazil ordered an investigation into Elon Musk and his American social media platform X for potential obstruction of justice.

The feud, to put it mildly, started when Musk refused to comply with a court order issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The court ordered the removal of certain accounts on X accused of spreading misinformation.

Misinformation has been a significant issue in Brazil, particularly during election periods. Candidates have been known to use its dissemination as a campaign strategy. During the 2018 elections, Jair Bolsonaro launched multi-million-dollar campaigns to bombard individuals with false and inciteful content on platforms like WhatsApp. And now, with the rise of artificial intelligence, the situation is more worrisome than ever. Misinformation can now seem scarily true.

In defiance, Musk took to X, saying, “This aggressive censorship appears to violate the law & will of the people of Brazil.” And since Musk believes that principles come ahead of profits, he will comply and sacrifice the revenue in Brazil.

And ever the opinionated entrepreneur, Musk called for Justice Moraes to resign, triggering a heated exchange between the tech mogul and the Brazilian judiciary.

Side note, X really is a treasure trove of humor. Look at this user’s reply:

In response, Justice Moraes initiated an inquiry into the tech magnate, adding him to an ongoing investigation into so-called “digital militias” accused of disseminating fake news and hate speech online. To make matters more personal, Moraes also opened a separate inquiry specifically focusing on Musk’s potential obstruction of justice.

And this isn’t Musk’s first row with legislators over what he considers a human’s basic right: free speech. In fact, the European Union (EU) investigated X for possible breaches related to content moderation and transparency.

A number of Brazilians are unhappy with the fact that Elon Musk is not complying with their country’s demands. Brazil’s Solicitor General Jorge Messias, a member of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s leftist government, expressed support for De Moraes, saying in a post on X that “we cannot live in a society in which billionaires domiciled abroad have control of social networks and put themselves in a position to violate the rule of law.”

Brazil, like many other countries, is trying to hold individuals and tech companies accountable for their role in disseminating disinformation.
