Nine research hubs in the Uk will receive funding of £90 Million towards research on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be developed responsibly.

Leading AI companies have responded positively to the UK government’s recent pledge to maintain future laws and regulations on rapid technological advancements.

The UK government promised an amount that exceeds £100 million ($125 million) to ensure that new AI technologies are developed responsibly and applied safely.

“I welcome the UK government’s statement on the next steps for AI regulation, and the balance it strikes between supporting innovation and ensuring AI is used safely and responsibly,” stated Lila Ibrahim, the chief operating officer (COO) at Google DeepMind.

Aidan Gomez, co-founder, and chief executive of Cohere, states, “By reaffirming its commitment to an agile, principles-and-context-based, regulatory approach to keep pace with a rapidly advancing technology the UK government is emerging as a global leader in AI policy.”

Experts in the field highlighted that laws and regulations regarding AI must be developed at a rate that matches the rapid advancement of the technology while considering all risks.

The plan includes a budget of £90 million set towards AI around research hubs at several universities across Britain to use AI responsibly, especially in the areas of health and chemistry.

The additional £10 million is currently handed over to regulators in order to “prepare and upskill” their own staff to “address the risks and harness the opportunities” of AI. The government has addressed regulators which include Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority. They requested the companies to state, demanding they disclose how they intend to take control over AI technology towards the end of April 2024.

This goes to show that although AI is moving at a fast pace, the UK is moving. By setting up a budget for research hubs and dedicating it to advancements in MedTech and chemistry it shows that AI can purely be used for the benefit of multiple sectors and the benefit of humans.
