What Would AI-Centric OS Look Like?
In November, /dev/agents, a startup led by former Google executives, secured a $56 million investment to develop an AI operating system to redefine human-computer interaction and simplify agent-based application development.
The project was headed by David Singleton, former Google vice president of engineering; Hugo Barra, Ficus Kirkpatrick, and Nicholas Jitkoff, also all from the tech behemoth. They want to solve the complexities of building agent-based applications by architecting an AI based operating system from the ground up-designed for today’s capabilities.
Revolutionizing Human-Computer Interaction
Existing operating systems rely on file-based architecture and classic devices like keyboards and mice, but new AI operating systems reimagine this approach. Brian Jackson, with Info-Tech Research Group, added that an AI-first operating system would instead be “data-based, with intelligent models in perpetual learning and adaptation.”
The AI powered operating system will use natural language, gestures, or even eye movements as interfaces, enabling developers to build applications with AI in operating system agents that analyze data, predict outcomes, and make decisions.
Giants such as Microsoft, Salesforce and ServiceNow are already investing in these platforms. Analysts predict that by 2028, one-third of the enterprise software will be enabled with “agentic AI” which can enable systems to do most of the day-to-day tasks on their own.
Focus on AI and the Future of Operating System
The announcement highlights AI operating services and their growing role in shaping next-generation enterprise tools. According to Gartner, agentic AI can transform decision-making by doing the heavy lifting of complex data analytics and independently recommending or independently taking action.
Deloitte predicts that by 2027, nearly half of the companies using generative AI will integrate agentic AI into their workflows. While /dev/agents has shared a few technical details, its ambition to reimagine an AI operating system could fundamentally reshape human-computer relationships. As Singleton emphasized, “We need a platform that simplifies building useful agents,” laying the groundwork for a future where AI seamlessly enhances both personal and professional environments.
At the End of the Day
As the AI Operating evolves intelligent agents could redefine how technology supports decision-making and creativity. With a cast of industry veterans and a bold vision, /dev/agents is positioning itself to lead this transformative shift. Their work may catalyze the reimagining of digital infrastructure and close the gap between human intention and machine intelligence. It works by embracing natural interfaces and learning models, aiming to break through complexities to realize the full potential of AI capabilities for operating systems and allow innovation to bloom both at personal and professional levels. This could reshape industries; it’s a milestone in AI-driven evolution.
