Instagram Will Soon Remove End-to-End Encryption from Your DMs

Meta will officially deactivate Instagram end to end encryption for all direct messages across the globe.

On May 8, Meta will officially deactivate its Instagram end to end encryption for all direct messages (DMs) globally, allowing the app to adhere to government safety laws since it will be possible to monitor the destructive elements.

The policy is a milestone in the lives of millions of people who cherish digital privacy. However, this Instagram direct message update forces us to think differently about our conversations and memories.

Is Instagram Encrypted?

For years, many of us relied on Instagram encryption as a digital seal for our private thoughts. The technology scrambled messages so that only the sender and the receiver could read them.

“Think of it like a sealed envelope. The postal service can see who sent it and who received it. But they cannot open it,” explained digital privacy expert, Harry Maugans.

By removing Instagram end to end encryption, the platform is essentially opening those envelopes, allowing the company to access the text and media within your threads. The timing of this change is deeply connected to the legal landscape.

The update arrives just twelve days before the ‘Take It Down Act’ takes full effect. To meet strict safety deadlines, platforms need the technical ability to see and scan encrypted direct messages.

Maugans notes that the timing is likely not a coincidence, as platforms cannot remove harmful content they cannot see. By ending Instagram end to end encryption, the company positions itself to follow these new rules and cooperate with federal oversight.

While child protection groups have welcomed the move, privacy advocates feel different.

Maya Thomas from Big Brother Watch criticized the situation, saying that people depend on encrypted direct messaging so that their information would not fall into the hands of hackers.

“Your private communications should be secure,” Thomas remarked what Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said in 2019.

Does Instagram Read Your DMs?

Because the security of these messages is changing, it is vital to take a moment to look back at your Instagram private DMs. If you used the encrypted ‘lock’ feature, those messages may be at risk of disappearing or becoming part of a standard, readable chat flow.

Maugans suggests that users should act quickly to save their history, as the removal of Instagram end to end encryption makes the future of those chats unclear.

“The leading theories are either the messages are going to become public and join the rest of your chat flow, or the messages might just be deleted,” Maugans said.

If you decide to save your history, the way you store your encrypted direct messages matters just as much as the act of downloading them. Simply moving a chat to a cloud service like Google Drive might expose it to data brokers.

“If you turn around and upload that downloaded chat backup to Google Drive or iCloud… you’re uploading the unencrypted raw version of these chats,” Maugans warns.

To truly keep your history private, it is best to store those files locally on your own physical device. For those who still feel the need for total privacy, the path forward may lead from mainstream social media.

While Meta suggests moving to WhatsApp, Maugans points out that even with Instagram encryption, the metadata -the record of who you talk to and when- is still visible to the company.

According to Maugans, if privacy is the goal, then why not leave Meta’s platforms entirely. So, he recommends Signal as a transparent, nonprofit alternative for those seeking reliable encrypted Instagram messaging.

As we move toward May 19, the digital world is becoming more regulated. The Take It Down Act provides a much-needed shield for victims of AI-generated exploitation, but it changes the nature of encrypted direct messaging on major social apps.

While Instagram end to end encryption served many as a private sanctuary for years, the responsibility for protecting user’s encrypted Instagram messaging now rests more than ever in our own hands.
