Raspberry Pi Unleashes AI Power with Hailo

Raspberry Pi has released an AI chip in partnership with Hailo for the Raspberry Pi 5 case featuring the Hailo -8L M.2 accelerator.

Raspberry Pi has released an AI chip in partnership with Hailo for the Raspberry Pi 5 case featuring the Hailo -8L M.2 accelerator.

This new AI kit costs $70 dollars and is designed to enhance the mini- computer with AI capabilities. It also leverages the company’s Hardware Attached on Top, HAT + extension card, which enables easy integration of additional hardware.

Seamless Integration and High Performance

The HAT+ card includes an M.2 slot, a standard interface used in many PCs, connected through a single-lane PCIe 3.0 interface with an 8Gbps bandwidth.  This architecture allows users to link various extension modules, such as the new AI accelerator from Hailo.

The startup chipmaker aims to compete with giants, such as Nvidia.

The AI kit features the 8L module from Hailo, a basic chip developed in an M.2 form factor. It enhances the capabilities of the Raspberry Pi 5 case, enabling it to perform AI inferencing tasks at a rate of 13-tera operations per second (TOPS).

Hailo Vs. Nvidia

Yet, despite its high capabilities, the AI kit won’t be able to outperform Nvidia’s Graphic Processing units (GPUs), which have a more significant power. While Hailo-8L is more budget friendly and could be used on specific applications focusing on power efficiency and edge computing.

Enhanced Software with Great Potential

Speaking of software, the Raspberry Pi 5 case OS latest version can automatically identify the Hailo module, which enables it to be used by the operating system and compatible applications. Moreover, the tiny PC has upgraded its camera applications to support neural network reasoning, boosting capabilities such as object detection, image segmentation, body posture estimation, and facial feature detection.

These advancements are just a small part of the AI kit’s potential applications. With this new tool, users will be able to explore a wide range of features, other than those of camera-based ones.
